USEFUL INFORMATION

MUSEUMS - ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES

  • The Archaelogical Museum:
    Located in Myrina, displays important exhibits from Neolithic to Roman times.
  • The Ecclesiastical Museum:
    Housed within the Bishop/s Mansion at Myrina, contains Byzantine icons and religious objects.
  • The Folkore Museum of Partianou village:
    Includes a number of local artifacts in a traditional two-storey building.
  • Myrina Castle:
    Comprises of long walls as well as ruins of buildings and storehouses.
  • Poliochni:
    Extensive remains from one of the oldest neolithic cities of Europe.
  • Hephaestia:
    Remains of a classical city, including part of a theater, sanctuary and baths.
  • Kavirio:
    Ruins of an ancient sanctuary. 

ACCOMMODATION

Most hotels are located around Myrina and Plati. Small hotels, furnished studios and rooms can also be found in Moudros, Aghios Yiannis, Kaspakas, Thanos, Kontias, Kalliopi, Repanidi, Kotsinas, Kontopouli and other villages.

BEACHES

Over a hundred beaches-most of which are sandy-surround the island. Some of the more popular beaches have water sports/ facilities but the majority are tranquil and unspoiled.

TRANSPORT

  • Inland:
    All main roads are paved wirh asphalt while the non-asphalt roads leading to popular beaches and sight-seeings are generally well-maintained. There are several taxis and car-rental offices on the island as well as a basic bus service.
  • By Sea & Air:
    There are regular ferry services to the port of Myrina from and to Piraeus, Rafina, Kavala, Mitilini, Thessaloniki, Alexandroupolis and Aghios Ephstratios. Also connection with Samothrace during the summer.
    There are also regular flights by Olympic Airways to and from Athens, Thessaloniki and Mitilini.
